A good custom dog portrait should feel unmistakably like your dog—not simply like the breed. Boone & Tail creates square, watercolor-style dog portraits from customer photographs in our signature peekaboo composition. The face enters from the bottom of the artwork while a generous field of warm, quiet color gives the portrait its distinctive presence.

A dog portrait built around recognizable details

Two dogs of the same breed can look completely different to the people who know them. We pay closest attention to the details that carry identity: the shape and set of the ears, eye color, muzzle proportions, blaze placement, freckles, masks, patches, and the natural asymmetry of the coat. A French bulldog's upright ears need a different balance than a spaniel's feathered ears or a boxer's expressive muzzle. Those differences are the portrait.

The final image is a watercolor-style illustration rather than a filtered photograph. The original room, car, yard, leash, and background are removed. The composition is redrawn against a warm ivory field, with the most definition reserved for the eyes, nose, whiskers, and markings.

Dog photos that work best

Natural window light or open shade usually produces the clearest reference. Photograph near your dog's eye level instead of looking sharply down from above. A phone photo can work beautifully when it is sharp and large enough to show the eyes, nose, and coat pattern. Avoid heavy filters, screenshots, deep shadows, motion blur, and photographs where an ear or side of the face is hidden.
