More than a generic cat illustration

A portrait should not flatten every cat into the same face. We look for eye spacing, face shape, ear proportions, nose color, whisker pads, coat length, and asymmetric markings. For black cats, tonal changes around the eyes and muzzle keep the features readable without turning the coat grey. For calicos and tortoiseshells, the irregular pattern is part of the likeness. For tabbies, the direction and placement of facial stripes matter as much as their color.

The original photographic background is removed completely. Furniture, blankets, carriers, window glare, and household clutter do not appear in the finished artwork. The portrait is redrawn as a watercolor-style illustration on a warm neutral field, keeping definition in the eyes, nose, and whiskers while the fur remains softer.

Choosing the right cat photo

Use a sharp image taken near eye level. Natural light is ideal because it records accurate eye and coat color. Both eyes should be visible when possible, and the ears should not be hidden behind furniture or cropped out of the reference. If your favorite photo is older, send the largest original file you have instead of a screenshot from social media.
